PAK vs SL: Super 4 Match 5 Preview
Team Pakistan
This is a must-win match for Pakistan if they want to advance to the final of the Asia Cup 2023. After defeating Nepal in the group stage and then a washout game with India due to rain where both teams shared points, Pakistan qualified for the Super 4 round. Now, the three matches in the Super 4 would be against Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka and to qualify for the final, they have to win two matches.
The very first match was against Bangladesh and they were too good. They bowled beautifully and did not offer any room to Bangladesh’s batsmen. Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah took 7 wickets together to dismantle the opposition’s innings. Only Shakib and Rahim could score fifties but that was not enough. In batting, Pakistan lost a couple of batsmen very early, but then Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammed Rizwan stitched a fine partnership to get the team over the line. Imam scored 78 while Rizwan scored 63* and the job got done in style.
The next match against the arch-rivals India was a disastrous one. They were humiliated at the hands of India. After electing to bowl first, they bowled some good overs in the powerplay but once the Indian batters got set, they lost their way. Every Pakistani bowler was going for runs. Only Shaheen and Shadab took a single wicket each.
The rain interrupted and the match couldn’t resume the same day and we had to go for the next day which was a reserve day for this clash. Indian batters Virat Kohli and KL Rahul batted till the end and put a mammoth total of 356 for 2 in 50 overs. Kohli scored 122* and KL Rahul scored 111* in the end.
In response to this, Pakistan batsmen could never get settled since the Indian pacers were too good to handle at the moment. Not a single batter could touch the 30-run mark and wickets continued to tumble. In the end, they lost the match by 228 runs which is the highest margin victory for India against Pakistan in the ODIs. Pakistan might be forced to make some changes in the team. Haris and Naseem might not play and Mohammed Nawaz and Mohammed Wasim Jnr may replace them.
Team Sri Lanka
For Sri Lanka, this is also a must-win match for them. they also started well in the Super 4 stage and beat Bangladesh by 21 runs. Initially, they did not begin well in the batting, the openers went after a steady start and then Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama were involved in a fine partnership. Mendis went just after scoring fifty and Samarawickrama fell short of 7 runs from his century. After this partnership, they lost wickets regularly and in the end managed to score 257 for 9 in 50 overs.
While defending the target, they never allowed Bangladesh batters to get settled right from the beginning. They took wickets regularly and Bangladesh was short of 21 runs from the target. Maheesh Theekshana, Dasun Shanaka and Matheesha Pathirana took 3 wickets each which dismantled the opposition’s batting.
The next match against India was a thriller. India had a fine start before the spin was introduced. Dunith Wellalage took a 5-fer and Charith Asalanka took a 4-fer to dismantle the Indian batting order. The target was 213 runs and in response to that, Sri Lankan batsmen couldn’t survive in tough batting conditions. They became the prey of the Indian bowling.
Dhananjaya de Silva and Dunith Wellalage stitched a partnership of 63 runs which was going absolutely fine till the moment Dhananjaya played a lose shot and threw his wicket. India again got back in the game and in the end, Sri Lanka lost the match by 41 runs.
